Paediatric Examination Preparation and Mentorship

Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) Examination

The examination is knowledge-based only. It will be run in the form of a paper-based Multiple Choice Questionnaire (MCQ) in English. Candidates will have 3 hours to answer 90 questions.This is based on the core syllabus in respiratory medicine printed in 2009.

Online Sample Test

This online test is designed to simulate the actual HERMES examination in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine. This test contains a total of 30 questions which have followed the same stringent quality control as all the MCQ’s (multiple choice questions) in the examination. The aim is to give you insight into the format, difficulty level and a sample of what is being asked in each MCQ.

Examination regulations

  • Identification documents will be required on the day of the examination
  • Examination duration is maximum of 3 hours for 90 questions
  • Examination aids are not permitted e.g. review aids, calculator
  • Mobile phones, laptops, PDA's and other electronic aids are not permitted during the examination
  • Copying or cheating of any description will result in disqualification and exclusion from future applications to sit the examination.


The examination blueprint maps the topics covered in the examination giving the percentage devoted to such topics and can be helpful for participants preparing for the exam. The examination blueprint has been updated in September 2016.

ERS Handbook in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine

ERS Summer school of paediatric respiratory medicine

The Summer school is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of each of the major fields of paediatric respiratory medicine based on the HERMES syllabus and a perfect opportunity to prepare for the European examination in paediatric respiratory medicine. The programme is designed to challenge participants and provide a learning framework including interactive sessions and MCQ discussion sessions. The next Summer school will take place in summer 2018. More information will be provided in the upcoming weeks.


Mentorship is available for those taking the Paediatric Diploma in Respiratory Medicine.  In order to help examination candidates in their preparation and revision, the HERMES Diplomates mentorship activity was launched.
Registered candidates will have the opportunity receive guidance on taking the examination and find out more about the positive experiences of taking the HERMES examination. We ask candidates to register and finalise their examination payments as early as possible in order to assure that a mentor will be allocated to them. Mentors cannot be allocated later than July.
