The inaugural Examination for the European Diploma in Respiratory Medicine was a great success. It marked a cornerstone in the standardisation of education and training in the specialty. This yearly examination is in line with the ERS commitment to achieving the highest possible standards of practice in the specialty and harmonising training across Europe.
This examination is knowledge-based examination with multiple choice questions (MCQ) in English. Each MCQ undergoes a rigorous process of formulation and validation to ensure that it illustrates state-of-the-art practices as well as authentic professional situations.
Assessment of learning: Assess your learning as a trainee and know where you stand at your level. Use the examination as a driver for learning.
Benchmark: Know where you stand against the European standards. Keep abreast of new developments in the field. Use the examination to verify and update your knowledge.

Mobility: Even without legal recognition, this is known and recognised within the profession throughout Europe and the world.
Tangible recognition: Upon successful completion, the ERS will grant you the European Diploma in Respiratory Medicine and be part of the HERMES Diplomates Club reserved to successful candidates with enhanced networking possibilities.
A candidate may sit the examination for the European Diploma in Adult Respiratory Medicine. This will be conferred from the ERS School upon successful completion of the examination. In accordance with the EU principle of subsidiarity, this examination will have no legal standing, since only national authorities can grant doctors the right to practice. The examination will therefore be reserved to registered medical practitioners who have already obtained their national accreditation (or equivalent) to practice as a specialist in adult respiratory medicine.
