Preliminary Phase

Background

A benchmark study was conducted on the maximum number of European Medical Societies in May 2005. All available information regarding training programmes and certification issues were collected, analyzed and classified. As a second step, some of the surveyed societies were contacted directly in order to obtain more targeted information regarding certain aspects of their programmes.

When available, the following criteria were taken into consideration: type of training programme; programme content and structure; target audience; project duration; date of project launch; examination types and costs.

Main findings

This benchmark study shows that most Medical Societies have recognised that standardisation of education across Europe is a priority.

Consequently, many medical specialties - be it through a European Society / Association or through their UEMS Board - already offer comprehensive training programmes or European Diplomas to the practicing specialists in their field.

The most common factor underlying these Societies' endeavour to standardise training across EU countries is the need to facilitate free movement of individuals throughout Europe . Secondly, another common factor is the intent to improve the quality of patient treatment and care.

Finally, there is also a clear intent to enhance the fact that these European initiatives are not aimed at interfering with any current national training programme.
