The HERMES Task Force met in Amsterdam over two days to finalise the European syllabus. In addition to finalising the syllabus itself, the Task Force members finalised the articles which will be published in the September issues of the ERJ and of Breathe to accompany the syllabus.
On the second day, the HERMES Task Force, discussed the next steps of the project, which will include developing curriculum recommendations as well as a voluntary European examination. All members agreed to carry on with their work for at least another year.
May 2006
In March and April 2006, over 480 respondents from all over Europe rated all items included in the draft European syllabus to help determine which competences should be mandatory, which ones should be optional, and also which level of competence trainees should have acquired for each competence by the time they qualify as specialists.
T

he main outcomes of this survey were discussed at a plenary meeting in Munich on 8 May 2006.
For this second round, trainees from all participating countries were personally asked to complete the survey. As an incentive, the ERS awarded 7 main prizes, and offered a one-year subscription to Breathe, the ERS educational journal, to all respondents. Winners of this contest were:

Preliminary results from this online survey
December 2005
Over its first two-day meeting, the Hermes Task Force established a draft list of core competencies. These are competencies which any trainee should have acquired by the end of their training in respiratory medicine. At this stage, the document does not mention which level of copmetence the trainee should have acquired for each listed item, as levels of competence will be determined at a later stage of the process.
