Curriculum Phase

Phase 2

Phase II of the HERMES Project concerns the development of two new elements which will further help harmonise Education and training of respiratory physicians across Europe.

European Curriculum Recommendations for Training in Adult Respiratory Medicine

The first element, which is the European Curriculum Recommendations for Training, provides a basis for curriculum development and implementation in individual countries. This document has main sections which provide a rationale for training in Respiratory Medicine arranged according to:

  • The clinical field of respiratory medicine
  • Principles underpinning the development of a curriculumfor respiratory medicine
  • The education of respiratory medicine trainees
  • Assessment
  • The characteristics and responsibilities of key training personnel
  • Accountability and regulation
  • Quality assurance, validation, accreditation and evaluation of the programme
  • The curriculum modules

This curriculum was drafted by our Task Force. Similar to what was done with the syllabus, a wide-reaching consultation was organised to ensure that consensus is achieved throughout the content of the curriculum. A Delphi process was staged, so that all interested parties can assess the curriculum contents in a number of surveys by groups of diseases.

Educational resources

The second element to be developed will be a website (to be included in the ERS learning resources) which will link existing ERS educational resources (such as ERS Guidelines, Monographs, Journal articles etc) to the appropriate modules of the HERMES syllabus. This will help physicians and trainees to quickly access materials matching their areas of interest.

The HERMES Task Force would like to involve trainees in the reviewing process of the educational resources which will be linked to the HERMES syllabus. As a reward, trainees will be offered two months free ERS membership granting them access to all ERS materials.
