The first element under ongoing development is a Curriculum Framework which provides a framework as basis for curriculum development and implementation in individual countries. This document has two main sections. Section I provides a rationale for training in Respiratory Medicine in terms of:
Section II is composed of 34 modules which largely coincide with the syllabus modules published in 2006. Each module contains elements of knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviour and cites existing Guidelines.
This curriculum was drafted by our Task Force. Similar to what was done last year, a wide-reaching consultation is being organised to ensure that consensus is achieved throughout the content of the curriculum. A Delphi process will therefore be staged, so that all interested parties can assess the curriculum contents in a number of surveys by groups of diseases. The inaugural HERMES European examination in adult respiratory medicine will be held on the Saturday afternoon, October 4th at the ERS 2008 Congress in Berlin. The European Diploma in Respiratory Medicine will be awarded to its successful candidates.

The Paediatric HERMES Task Force is now formally approved. The project will be headed by its chair Monika Gappa, and co-chair Jimmy Paton. The task force will produce an updated European Core syllabus for the Paediatric Respiratory Medicine specialists.
