Welcome to the
HERMES website!

HERMES (Harmonised Education in Respiratory Medicine for European Specialists) was launched in the spring of 2005 by the ERS in close collaboration with

 FERS
 UEMS Section of Pneumology,
 EBAP
Permanent Working Group of European Junior Doctors.

A Task Force consisting of 13 experts, assisted by a team of national respondents representing all participating countries have successfully collaborated to develop the first generally accepted European syllabus in adult respiratory medicine. They are currently working towards the development of a consensus-based European curriculum and towards the introduction of a European knowledge-based examination in respiratory medicine.

The principles and ideals of the HERMES initiative have spread to other respiratory specialties. The Paediatric Assembly has begun its Paediatric HERMES task force which will produce an updated consensus-based European core syllabus. In January, Assembly 9 launched a project called European Spirometry Driving License, aimed at making a comprehensive review of the current spirometry training programmes in Europe. This project will result in recommendations for a spirometry certification programme in Europe.  This is in line with harmonising the education and training in spirometry.

After months of hard work, the Paediatric HERMES Task Force has produced a draft syllabus ready for assessment in an online Delphi process. Click here to access the online Delphi survey.

Adult HERMES Latest Stand
The HERMES project entered its second phase.

Over the past 12 months, our task force has worked hard to produce a draft curriculum, which provides a framework for training in Respiratory Medicine in terms of:

  • Organisation
  • Course management
  • Teching methods
  • Learning methods
  • Assessment methods.

This draft document contains 34 modules which largely coincide with the syllabus modules published in 2006. Each of these 34 modules are built according to a common structure:

  • Knowledge
  • Skills
  • Behaviours and attitudes
  • Existing Guidelines

This document was submitted to a wider audience for feedback and comments. Following the successful process introduced to develop the European Core syllabus, a Delphi survey was conducted in September/October 2007. A plenary session last December 15, 2007 in Munich discussed the results of this Delphi survey and the development of the European core curriculum.
